“The earth and everything in it belongs to the LORD.” Psalm 24:1
I find myself receiving solace today – another day in which we feel the polarization of political voices – from sources that always comfort me – scripture and hymns.
Perhaps it is the gentle reminder that no matter what is going on in politics, or indeed, in the entire world…”this is my Father’s world.” Hymn-writer Maltbie D. Babcock put it this way, “This is my Father’s world, O let me ne’er forget that though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the Ruler yet.”
While it is easy to succumb to the voices that fill our politics and our airwaves with different variations on truth that pervert Christ’s call to compassion, God’s abounding grace, and the Spirit’s longing to dwell, richly, within us, today my television is off, and I focus on those nobler things, especially now as we struggle to hear a clear melody of hope and truth, lost within the cacophony of politics.
Solace comes as I sing the end of Babcock’s hymn, “This is my Father’s world, the battle is not done; Jesus who died shall be satisfied, and earth and heaven be one.”
Amen. May it be so, Lord Jesus.
