Ode to the End of Summer (2012)

Today is the last day of summer vacation for my daughter.  It’s back to school bright and early tomorrow morning…can’t believe another summer comes to an end.

I had high expectations for this summer.  My plan was to rest and enjoy a laid-back few months of not having too much on my plate.  I wanted to learn more than the three chords I know on guitar.  I wanted to play piano more…maybe pick up my flute again.  I wanted to exercise more and lose some excess weight.  I wanted to write more.  I wanted to float in the pool.  I wanted to spend more time with family and have friends over.

Oh well…

When I was a child it seemed that summer lasted forever.  Now that I am old…er, it passes in the blink of an eye…as does time, in general.

So, today I will focus on helping my daughter get everything ready for school tomorrow.  There will be clothes to wash and last-minute supplies to buy.  And though summer isn’t officially over, calendar-wise, until September 22nd, perhaps summer is more a state of mind than a time of year.  As the weather cools, I’ll just have to replace thoughts of floating in the pool with sitting by a cozy fire.

I can do that.
